Role Summary: The Lead Design Engineer performs subsystem design for the Trip Optimizer product. Trip Optimizer is a fuel saving cruise control system for trains. Trip Optimizer has been highly successful and is in operation on over 7000 locomotives on 10 different railroads in the US, Canada, Brazil, China, and Australia which has resulted in the savings of over 200 million gallons of diesel. Trip Optimizer provides design opportunities in a wide range of technologies.
Essential Responsibilities: The Lead Design Engineer demonstrates leadership in developing Subsystem designs to implement system requirement, business goals, and programs for a subsystem. In this role you will utilize your experience or expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and have the ability to effect short-term and some long-term business goals.
In addition you will:
Perform analysis and evaluation of allocated system level requirement using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, and procedures
Develop detailed subsystem designs and express these designs in User Stories, data models, data flow diagrams, state diagrams, requirements, pseudo code. and interface designs
Collaborate with System Engineers and Subsystem Engineers to develop solutions to customer requirements
Utilize Agile development techniques to collaborate with Software Engineers to deliver User Stories
Provide technical leadership to software development personnel implementing subsystem designs
Provide technical leadership to validation personnel developing and executing validation plans to validate subsystem designs
Investigate customer reported issues and develop solutions to resolve issues
Interact with customers and partners to define interfaces support integration with customer and third party systems
Execute on locomotive field testing to evaluate subsystem and system performance
Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments
Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews
Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science (or a high school diploma / GED with at least 4 years of IT, engineering, scientific or other technical experience)
At least 3 additional years of experience in an engineering position
Experience with Agile development methodology
Experience with Railroad industry and train control systems
Experience with developing designs for software based products
Strong technical aptitude, including applicable engineering tools and systems
Solid oral and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
