Role Summary: The Mechanical Technician is responsible for performing precision work with a wide variety of tools and equipment to repair, install and maintain mechanical components in the power generating facility. You will be responsible for troubleshooting and performing mechanical maintenance skills such as welding, pipe-fitting, boiler making, and machine shop repairs. You should have skills in rebuilding and aligning pumps and motors.
As the Mechanical Technician, you will:
Perform repair and maintenance work following blueprint sketches and procedures, and involving such tasks as welding, drilling, tapping, lathe operations, milling machine work, surface grinding, metal heating / cutting, and quality control
Identify mechanical design, troubleshoots machinery, provides machinery improvements or identifies problems and recommends modifications necessary for resolution
Maintain a complete log of time, material, and procedures and other information needed for the CMM system. This information is to be tracked in the MP-2 system or equivalent
Follow safety / environmental rules and regulations
Implement safe working practices and immediately identifies hazards and recommends and/or implements repairs
Perform power plant rigging, and lifting equipment necessary for safely handling heavy machinery and materials
Work with all departments in a team effort to support the Birchwood plant in attaining its goals
Train both maintenance and non-maintenance personnel to provide the requisite knowledge for them to complete assigned tasks correctly and safely
Schedule, coordinate, communicate, and monitor contractors on specific tasks as assigned
Attend to housekeeping of shop and work areas at the end of each job / task
Maintain boilers, turbine, and their auxiliary equipment. If certified and assigned, may make weld repairs to the boiler tubes, high-pressure piping, or vessels as required
Keep track of spare parts as they are used and complete a usage report in order to replace items as necessary
Assist in physical inventories
Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant operating manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams and preventive / predictive maintenance records
Complete other tasks as requested by the Maintenance Manager
High School Diploma / GED
Minimum of 4 years of industry / military experience, including completion of mechanic apprenticeship (or equivalent) and 4 years of power plant / industrial experience as a mechanic
Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Mechanical Technician, including 2 years of fossil fuel site-specific
Certification as a Mechanical Technician
Ability and willingness to possess and retain a valid driver’s license
Ability and willingness to work rotating shift work, including holidays, nights and weekends
Ability and willingness to work on your feet for 10 hour periods
Ability and willingness to climb stairs and ladders
Ability and willingness to routinely lift 75 lbs
Ability and willingness to wear protective equipment in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.)
Ability and willingness to work with hazardous materials, as required
Ability and willingness to work extended hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions
Ability and willingness to work an "On call" status, as required
Ability and willingness to participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility
Ability and willingness to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and perform basic mathematical computations
Working knowledge of computers, with experience with windows-based programs
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding in 4 of the following skills: pipe-fitting, welding, machining, rigging, rotating machine repair, fabrication, machine alignment, piping schematics, valve and valve actuator repair, and read mechanical drawings
Demonstrated ability to locate, troubleshoot, adjust and correct defects in complex mechanical equipment
Minimum of 4 years of demonstrated experience in 5 of the following 10 skills; plus a proficiency test in 1 of the skills: pipe-fitting, fabrication, rotating machinery repair, machine alignment, machining, rigging, welding, basic vibration analysis, valve repairs and oil analysis
Demonstrated ability to communicate, coordinate and lead work with others on technical subjects across job families
