Role Summary:
GE Digital is looking for a Software Engineer – Databases to support multiple enterprise-level mission critical applications from the database administrator (DBA) capacity. This includes: monitoring and maintaining general database health, defining schemas and models to support application requirements and scaling, supporting DBA-related Build activities, researching and implementing new DB practices and technologies as they apply to the application requirements.

Essential Responsibilities:
In this role, you will:
  • Maintain database health for multiple production applications
  • Support all pre-production, managed environments for middleware services and applications
  • Design database improvements, changes, schemes, etc. for emerging business and application requirements
  • Define database standards for tables, columns, indexes
  • Handle the daily responsibilities of supporting the build and release needs of Agile scrum teams
  • Provide guidance to cross-team and team members in database best practices and procedures
  • Deploy code and other proactive maintenance activities to keep the services up and running
  • Own specific problems and provide active coordination between various groups including internal and external groups in resolving a specific problem
  • Work with Development, QA and other teams to understand changes to the existing production environment on an ongoing basis and for environment support
  • Update documentation that communicates standards and best practices of the engineering team
  • Implement metrics, Success Factors and Key Performance Indicators for the process and the team
  • Research, propose and implement forward-looking data-store-related changes and systems

    Qualifications/Requirements:

    Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) or equivalent
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in Database Design OR Master’s degree with 1 year of experience.
  • At least 1 year focusing on Oracle systems

    Essential Requirements

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. GE may agree to sponsor an individual for an employment visa now or in the future if there is a shortage of individuals with particular skills.

    Desired Characteristics:

    Technical Expertise:

  • Oracle DBMS (EXADATA preferred)
  • Stored procedures/Functions/ Trigger Development
  • Strong in DB-related programming skills & DBMS concepts
  • Query optimization, Execution plan Analysis
  • Database Performance Monitoring
  • Additional Areas: MySQL, Postgres, NoSQL (Mongo, Cassandra, etc.)

    Business Acumen:

  • Demonstrates the initiative to explore alternate technology and approaches to solving problems
  • Skilled in breaking down problems, documenting problem statements and estimating efforts
  • Demonstrates awareness about competitors and industry trends
  • Ability to analyze impact of technology choices

  • Ability to take ownership of small and medium sized tasks and deliver while mentoring and helping team members
  • Ensures understanding of issues and presents clear rationale
  • Able to speak to mutual needs and win-win solutions
