Role Summary: As a member of Patent Engineering & Technology Intelligence Team, the Senior Patent Engineer has a pivotal role through the whole patenting process. He or she will contribute to the successful R&D process by providing support to identify competitive technical data and existing patents and helping the project team to develop strong patent portfolios.
Essential Responsibilities: In the role of Sr. Patent Engineer you will:
Work with Sr. IP Attorney to implement division-wide IP strategy
Conduct patent scrubbing and harvesting sessions with technology teams to identify protectable IP and ensure proper conversion of identified IP to formal Invention Disclosure Letters (IDLs) for assessment by a Patent Evaluation Board
Organize and manage numerous Patent Evaluation Boards to evaluate IDLs
Perform patent searches using patent search tools and databases
Support inventors to analyze scientific or technical documents, including previously-filed patents, to assess whether an invention is novel and non-obvious
Assist the patent application drafting and/or write detailed descriptions of inventions (patent drafts)
Direct and manage outside counsel in the day-to-day prosecution of a large portfolio of patent applications and ensuring that decisions are consistent with the business’ overall IP strategy
Organize and manage freedom-to-operate and clearance projects for new products and services, including reviewing search results and managing outside counsel assisting with the same
Analyze and identify patents for monetization opportunities
Actively contribute to creating a culture of patent excellence
Contribute to and deliver reports to evaluate products and technology trends from competitors, analyzing potential innovative solutions and value-added technological features and searching for recently-published patents / published applications on a regular basis
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical engineering or in an Engineering field from an accredited college or university
Minimum 5 years of experience in patent engineering
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university
Patent Agent registration with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
Genuine interest in technology, an eye for detail and an analytical mind
Experience / passion for working with intellectual property
Experience working with global teams
Six Sigma Green Belt Certified (for GE Employees)
