Role Summary: As the Software Engineer – Cloud Platform, you will build the foundation for GE’s Predix Cloud. You will be responsible for engineering and live site operations for cloud service infrastructure, PaaS fabric, deployment, monitoring, and capacity management of systems at web scale in a fully virtualized IaaS and PaaS operating environment. Working closely with GE Software technical product managers, you will deliver the platform that runs GE’s Industrial Internet.
In this role you will:
Be responsible for providing technical leadership and defining, developing, and evolving software in a fast paced and agile development environment using the latest software development m and infrastructure
Provide guidance to developers with either planning and execution and/or design architecture using agile methodologies such as SCRUM
Work with Product Line Leaders (PLLs) to understand product requirements & vision
Drive increased efficiency across the teams, eliminating duplication, leveraging product and technology reuse
Capture system level requirements by brainstorming with CTO, Sr. Architects, Data Scientists, Businesses & Product Managers
Leads impact assessment and decision related to technology choices, design /architectural Engineer GE’s PaaS, which includes, but is not limited to: Automated Continuous Delivery, Cloud Application Fabric, Operations Infrastructure, and Specific services such as Logging, Monitoring, and Messaging delivered in an “as-a-service” model
Identify and define non-functional requirements including, but not limited to: backward compatibility, performance, reliability, scalability, privacy, and security
Collaborate with cross functional stakeholders
Provide timely and accurate estimates for deliverables
Participate in strategic and tactical planning sessions
Identify opportunities for automation and develop scalable solutions
Lead and mentor members of the engineering team
BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or one of the following Computer Engineering or equivalent experience.
A minimum of 1 years of professional experience in Software Cloud Development
GE Leadership Program Graduates will get credit towards relevant work experience, commensurate to the program they have completed
Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. GE may agree to sponsor an individual for an employment visa now or in the future if there is a shortage of individuals with particular skills.
Must be willing to travel 10%
Must be willing to work out of an office located in San Ramon, CA
Experience of Linux operating systems preferred
Experience in engineering cloud/online services at massive scale, including large scale SQL/NoSQL services preferred
Excellent scripting skills that can be applied in live service environments (Ruby, Python, Bash, Powershell)
Experience using cloud resource provisioning tools and systems
Strong communication, and time management skills
Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-site organization
Experience working in Agile development environment
Familiarity with cloud automation and orchestration tools such as Chef and Terraform
Familiarity with cloud native platforms and cluster managers such as Cloud Foundry, Mesos, and Kubernetes
Comfortable and effective working in new areas that require experimentation and rapid problem solving
Flexible, continuous learner, willing to share knowledge
Ability to lead a team of engineers to deliver a cohesive solution
Facilitates and coaches software engineering team sessions on requirements estimation and alternative approaches to team sizing and estimation. Leads a community of practice around estimation to share best practices among teams
Knowledgeable about developments in UX in various contexts, businesses, and industries. Quantifies effectiveness of design choices by gathering data. Drives accountability and adoption. Publishes guidance and documentation to promote adoption of design. Proposes design solutions based on research and synthesis; creates general design principles that capture the vision and critical concerns for a program.
Demonstrates mastery of the intricacies of interactions and dynamics in Agile teams. Demonstrates advanced understanding of Lean Six Sigma principles (e.g., Black belt certified). Guides new teams to adopt Agile, troubleshoots adoption efforts, and guide continuous improvement. Provides training on Lean / Agile. Drives elimination of inefficiencies in coding process. Teaches XP practices to others. Actively embraces new methods and practices that increase efficiency and effectiveness.
Evaluates technology to drive features and roadmaps. Maps technology trends to internal vision. Differentiates buzzwords from value proposition. Embraces technology trends that drive excellence beyond traditional practices (e.g., Test automation in lieu of traditional QA practices).
