Essential Responsibilities:
As the Facilities Mechanical Engineer you will provide cost estimates for projects, engineering designs and solutions for office, laboratory renovation, and new lab equipment installations for all aspects of HVAC. You will work with a diverse team including unionized workforce, facilitators, facilities engineers, research staff, contract engineers/architects, and construction contractors.


You will:

  • Direct and lead Service Equipment Operators, HVAC mechanics and HVAC technicians. This includes managing OT, driving optimization of their workload, reduce cycle time, and reduce work order backlog
  • Maintain all exhaust, refrigerant replacement program, chillers, air handlers, and all HVAC databases
  • Be responsible to lead and drive successful installations, shutdowns, operations, troubleshooting, and controls strategy
  • Develop and review bid specification/design packages, construction documents, and review as-built drawings, work with construction contractors and contract engineers to drive system startup, commissioning, and personnel training
  • Provide troubleshooting for mechanical systems; piping, exhaust systems, controls, and HVAC including IAQ (Indoor Air Quality)
  • Be responsible for alarms, be on call for responding to critical alarms, and resolve system issues to maintain low alarms counts
  • Identify and provide training for Techs, Mechanics, and Service Equipment Operators on all aspects of troubleshooting site HVAC operations
  • Team with contract engineers and outside engineering/architect consultants to put together design specifications and drawings for construction packages

    Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Architectural Engineering with a building systems or mechanical/HVAC concentration
  • Minimum 2 years facilities operations experience
  • Operational experience using, installing, troubleshooting DDC and non-DDC HVAC control systems, including pneumatic controls
  • Demonstrated ability to design and troubleshoot various building systems such as process gases, steam and condensate, piping, pumps and pumping systems, chillers, cooling towers and HVAC systems, including hazardous exhaust
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, provide detailed lists of mechanical items/systems necessary to support the trades for construction of the project
  • Proficient troubleshooting of building mechanical and HVAC systems and ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Working knowledge of ASHRAE, ACGIH, NYS Mechanical Code, NYS Fire Code, NYS Building Codes, NFPA and OSHA compliance requirements
  • Demonstrated proficient knowledge and use of Microsoft Office suite of programs
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required; we will not sponsor individuals, now or in the future, for this job opening
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
  • Must be 18 years or older

    Desired Characteristics:
  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural/HVAC Engineering, or Facilities Mechanical Engineering
  • PE License
  • Experience with Honeywell and Automated Logic controls systems
  • Experience working with unionized workforce
  • Process engineering a plus
  • LEEDS certification a plus
  • Strong knowledge of ASHRAE, ACGIH, NYS Mechanical Code, NYS Fire Code, NYS Building Codes, NFPA and OSHA compliance requirements
  • Six-Sigma Certified GB/BB/MBB
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team
