The proposed activity is aimed at laying the groundwork for creating aerodynamic digital replicas of real Low Pressure Turbines of aeronautical engines. This will help engineers to close the loop connecting design, manufacturing and field service.
The theses will be carried out under the supervision of an academic tutor (Polytechnic of Turin) and an Avio Aero internal tutor. The whole project will be over by the first quarter of 2018.
There are a number of topics to be investigated, ranging from aero design system improvements - enhancing CFD modelling fidelity by simulating rotor/stator cavities - to the introduction of a new standard for global Material Review Board (MRB) assessment system, integrating manufacturing data in the design process.
This activity will require to familiarize with the aerodynamic, mechanical and thermal arrangements of several Aeronautical Turbines representing GE-Avio Aero legacy for commercial market segment. It will also require a good understanding of the aero design suite tools and procedures as well as to introduce a book of knowledge and new standards for tracking the turbine efficiency trends on annual basis.
