Role Summary:
Mechanical Design Engineer responsible for structural design and analysis of superconducting magnets for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). This role provides support to GE Healthcare’s New and Current Product programs and Variable Cost Productivity Programs. Participate in all phases of the product development life cycle from concept and specification generation to production ramp up, optimizing functionality, manufacturability, reliability, serviceability and cost.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Mechanical design and analysis of superconducting magnets and components used in MRI systems
- Structural design and stress analysis
- Component structural design and analysis at room and cryogenic temperatures
- Vibration, Modal and forced response analysis and hands on verification testing
- Design and implementation of verification activities using accelerometers, strain gages, spectrum analyzers
- Manufacturing support of mechanical assemblies
- Reliability analysis of components and systems
- Failure and fatigue analysis
- Installed Base data analysis and reduction. Lead resolution of issues relating to Installed Base Systems
• Preparation/presentation of design analysis reports and part/assembly drawing reviews
• Develop product, component test and purchase specifications
• Design leadership of productivity projects (both product cost and life cycle cost reduction)
• Coordinate cross-functional design, analysis and testing.
• Provide creative solutions to unstructured product and system design issues from both factory and field

The successful candidate will:
• Join the magnet/gradient engineering team, centered in Florence, SC, USA (world’s largest plant for superconducting magnet production), part of Global MR Science & Technology.
• Participate in all phases of the product development life cycle, from concept and product specification generation, to manufacturing ramp up, optimizing functionality, manufacturability, reliability, serviceability and cost.
• Be involved in both new product design and support of existing products with manufacturing, sourcing and service.
• Participate in product safety, cost out, cycle time reduction and quality enhancement projects.
• Support and comply with the quality and safety goals of GE Healthcare (GEHC).
• Define superconducting magnet concepts, functional requirements and program goals.
• Provide support and direction in the design and analysis of advanced products.
• Support the manufacturing plant and the Installed Base

Qualifications/Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
• MS in Mechanical or Related Engineering
• Engineering experience: 5-10 years (in superconducting MRI magnet preferred)
• Demonstrated design & analysis experience of structural systems and components
• Hands on hardware experience on build and test of mechanical systems and components
• Experience with modal analysis, modal testing and modal test SW (e.g. Star Modal, B&K Modal)
• Demonstrated experience with design, analysis and experimental verification of structural borne noise attenuation and acoustic management
• Effective understanding and working knowledge of metals, plastics, and composite materials at cryogenic temperatures
• Proven design and failure analysis of structures for static and fatigue design
• Reliability analysis of mechanical components and systems
• Paper to product experience with ability to read and apply GD&T
• Ability to work with cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams
• Leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

1. Aware of and comply with the GEHC Quality Manual, Quality Management System, Quality Management Policy, Quality Goals, and applicable laws and regulations as they apply to this job type/position.

2. Complete all planned Quality & Compliance training within the defined deadlines.

3. Identify and report any quality or compliance concerns and take immediate corrective action as required

Desired Characteristics:
• PhD in Mechanical or Related Engineering with 10+ years of industrial experience
• Direct design & analysis experience of structural and cryogenic systems, components of Superconducting MRI Magnets
• Strong working and demonstrated experience of mechanical component design, analysis and testing
• Geometric and material linear and non-linear structural analysis experience
• Experience with design and analysis of composite components (eg. Fiber reinforced plastic, epoxies, carbon & glass fiber)
• Experience in numerical analysis tools and optimization methods.
• Capability to generate innovative concepts
• Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt Certification.
