Role Summary: Lead and perform structural design and analysis of wind turbine rotating parts components like flexible couplings and brake systems within the Drives & Structures COE in Salzbergen, Germany. The Design Engineer supports the product through the entire life cycle from conceptual design through design and development, testing, qualification, manufacturing and installed fleet support. They drive technical excellence and continuous improvement in the design, cost, producibility
Essential Responsibilities: • Design flexible couplings and brake systems for wind turbines with analytical and FEA methods • Verify how the component function is impacting overall wind turbine behavior. • Responsible for Design, development and testing to prove component function and reliability • Provide innovative design solutions to meet aggressive timing, product cost and reliability targets • Create and revise drawings, specifications and design practices applying GE and industry processes and standards • Work cross functionally with quality teams, manufacturing engineers, sourcing, suppliers, field support and others to improve product quality and first time yield • Support manufacturing, sourcing and field support with issue resolution and quick corrective actions for design related causes. • Drive quick, complete technical root cause analysis of field failures and identify design related corrective actions to prevent recurrence • Support global supply chain activities for quality assurance and fulfillment across the globe • Identify and execute cost saving ideas and strategies
Qualifications/Requirements: - B.A./M.A. (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Structural Engineering. - Engineering or other technical experience - Solid background in mechanical design engineering, with good mechanical sense and fundamental base - Solid experience in designing, qualifying, supplier and fleet support of rotating machinery or brake systems - Knowledge in design and analysis tools like 3D UG, Matlab, etc. - Knowledge with calculation programs like ANSYS - Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills - Technical drawing and design interpretation background - Ability to work with global team members across cultural boundaries - Fluent English written and spoken
Desired Characteristics: - Master Degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering - Basic knowledge of wind turbine design, components, assembly and manufacture - Familiar with one or more simulation programs like Matlab - Working knowledge of 3D-CAD tools like UG - Working knowledge of Ansys or other finite element analysis tools - Proven ability to work under pressure and challenging conditions. Strong desire and ability to drive improvement and change - Six Sigma Green Belt Certification (GE Employees only) - Willingness to travel
