Role Summary: We are looking for an experienced engineer with a strong interest in dynamic language implementation, especially on the Java Virtual Machine. Our product is written in a proprietary dynamic language, Magik, which has just had its first release hosted on the JVM and makes extensive use of the support for dynamic languages introduced at Java 7.
• Identify, develop, evaluate, and introduce software engineering solutions to meet near term and long range engineering needs • Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation and presentation of technical data • Deliver world-class quality in the development and support of products. • Be part of an experienced agile team and deliver through the agile development cycle • Communicate effectively both within the immediate team & other Smallworld teams • Demonstrate a strong sense of team; contributing to maintaining and motivating the energy of the teams • Facilitate and coach software engineering team sessions on requirements estimation and alternative approaches to team sizing and estimation etc.

This role is for a specialist engineer that digs deep into the foundations of our products to continually improve performance and evolve the language facilities and implementation.
You’ll keep up to date with the latest developments in your area of expertise and set technical direction to take advantage of new Java features and increase easy interoperability with other languages on the JVM.
You will enjoy the challenge of systems arch and have a sense of how the pieces fit together. This role will give you the chance to really make your mark as you refine one of the largest dynamic language implementations on the JVM. Having gained a unique understanding of our product foundations you’ll want to be the go to person for questions and you’ll enjoy sharing this knowledge with your colleagues and maybe even the wider JVM runtime community.
• Experience with compiler and runtime techniques for dynamic languages (eg Ruby, Python, Smalltalk). • Strong experience in C, Java, the Java Native Interface, the ASM JVM bytecode generator, ANTLR (or other parser generator), and JSR292 / invokedynamic. • Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, or Engineering or other degree with relevant experience or equivalent knowledge and experience.

• The ideal candidate should have knowledge of the Java Virtual Machine and the Java ecosystem, compiler construction, C, JNI, and experience in using profiling tools to identify performance problems on both Windows and Unix. • Knowledge of OSGi is an advantage • Proven experience in Agile methodology
