Role Summary: The Design Engineer will execute and support engineering work to support the growing Onshore Wind business in the Gearbox Global Center of Excellence. The responsibility includes working with the lead / senior engineers and project managers on new product development, fleet issue resolution, with suppliers in improving the production gearboxes quality, cost, & reliability and in support of product development.
Essential Responsibilities: This position involves design & developing solutions, products and specifications within the global Wind, Gearbox/ Drives COE for improved drivetrain engineering as well as design liaison with gearbox supplier engineering & manufacturing.
The position will report to the Manager of Wind Gearbox/Drives. In this role, the Design Engineer will work cross functionally with product management, systems engineers, services, product management and the sourcing and sourcing quality teams. The Design Engineer will work with fleet issues as well as with suppliers. In addition, the Design Engineer will:
• Responsible for design, development and testing of Gearbox & Drives components for wind turbines • Perform mechanical analysis using finite element methods • Create and revise drawings, specifications and design practices applying GE and industry processes and standards • Develop field or lab prototype test plans and evaluate data to prove component function and reliability • Work cross functionally with quality teams, manufacturing engineers, sourcing, suppliers, field support and others to improve product quality and first time yield • Support manufacturing, sourcing and the field with issue resolution and quick corrective actions for design related causes • In-person support of global supply chain activities for quality assurance and fulfillment across the globe • Identify and execute cost saving ideas and strategies • Drive lessons learned, best practices and standardization into drawings, specifications, and design practices • Identifies inefficiencies in the design process and drives solutions to improve quality and productivity • Implementation of corrective actions in field issues on gearboxes • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures
Qualifications/Requirements: • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar • Minimum 3 years of engineering experience or equivalent • Strong verbal and written communication skills aligned to technical role leading cross functional efforts • Turbomachinery gear application and bearing design experience • Experience with 3D-CAD tools (NX/Unigraphics preferred) • Experience with ANSYS or other finite element analysis tools
Desired Characteristics: • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar • GE Business tools and practices expertise • Strong problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude (root cause analysis experience) • Technical drawing, GD&T and design interpretation background • Proven project, program leadership experience • Ability to work under pressure and challenging conditions • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills • Ability to work with global team members across cultural boundaries • Wind turbine experience
