Role Summary:
The Head of Hardware and Software for Avitas Systems is the functional head for our Engineering team, driving the pace, discipline and expertise across the function. This leader will report to a senior staff member within GE Ventures until a final CEO is hired to lead the company.

Essential Responsibilities:
This role will have broad responsibility for providing a combination of technical and market vision to foster the platform development plan of Avitas, working with outside vendors to integrate several key pieces of technology into the platform, meeting with prospective customers in a variety of markets, influencing the direction of the product development efforts, transitioning Avitas through the ideation and prototyping process to product commercialization. The successful candidate will have an intimate understanding of the power of applying new technology to inspection processes in a number of diverse fields of use. The leader will be tasked with identifying, evaluating and translating technological capabilities into strategic decisions related to the platform development efforts for Avitas. As Engineering Leader, you will be responsible for leading lead and managing your development teams to ensure successful software program execution including:
  • Leading team construction, including staffing, head-count, functional skill mix, expertise, training
  • Designing and delivering a cloud-based platform and application suite capable of ingesting, analyzing and imaging high volumes of structured and unstructured data
  • Ensuring high quality software is delivered by measuring and providing guidance working with quality assurance and delivery teams
  • Working closely with engineering and agile leaders to drive organization transformation and world-class engineering practices, such as extreme programming
  • Defining and de-risking opportunities through rapid cycle software innovation and demonstration
  • Driving innovation, value and growth through program execution
  • Overseeing group financials, program expenses (forecast/actuals), travel, supplies, contract and full-time labor
  • Being accountable for all group resources, including hardware, software, IT infrastructure, supplies and tools
  • Provide the energy and guidance necessary to motivate the direct team and other internal partners
  • Setting the pace in what we expect to be an agile and lean start-up environment
  • Overseeing program velocity, burn-up, defect tracking and information dashboards
  • Managing quality, defect detection, tracking and elimination; test frameworks and automation

  • Engaging with senior business leaders, product owners and GE customers to understand market needs and vision; quickly translate market, business and technical needs into demonstrable software on a regular rhythm
  • Working with senior business leaders and product owners to manage program definition, execution, launch and support; defining and executing against multi generation software technology plans
  • Working closely to ensure oversight and compliance rhythms through the business
  • Working with Finance, HR, IT and other functions to achieve needed support
  • Developing a strategy and tactically executing against a plan to build a team structure that aligns with resource and program demands
  • Advancing technical and leadership expertise through coaching, mentoring, grooming and promotions of team members
  • Driving increased efficiency across the teams, eliminating duplication, leveraging product and technology reuse, particularly items that are being developed within GE’s Predix environment for other business units
  • Delivering resource strategy and plans, including extensive use of third party partners for development and support activities
  • Communication effectively within both the immediate team and GE leadership
  • Collaborate closely with internal partners to strategize about potential applications and market opportunities, partnerships, and long-term product development pipeline
  • Provide interface and work closely with internal development organization to drive the evolution of the core platform and enable the successful launch of new products, outlining the development process and timelines for product completion
  • Ensure that the architectural design for subsystems align with business needs and technical standards.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in the software development lifecycle (design architecture, development and deployment
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in an engineering leadership role: leading teams of 50+ people
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience developing software in an Agile environment
  • Minimum of 2 years leading Agile scrum teams

Desired Characteristics:
  • Experience leading a platform engineering team that delivered a minimum of 10 major releases
  • Experience leading design and development of scalable, multi-tier application software architectures in a complex business and big data environment; experience with cloud based data science solutions a plus.
  • Operating experience in both large and small company environments preferred; strong operational skills related to project management and financials.
  • Demonstrated success in the development, commercialization and launch of novel enterprise software products
  • Experience in product management and software integration in a regulated field
  • Strong discipline results oriented leader who is an effective motivator and communicator with the ability to distill key information in a situation and act accordingly.
  • Hands-on, collaborative and resourceful leader who will be comfortable navigating a large organization with broadly dispersed resources
  • Straightforward, open-minded, non-hierarchical
