Role Summary: The Sr Staff Lifecycle Operations Engineer – UNIX/Linux is a senior member of the GE Digital Compute Lifecycle Management Team and will concentrate on increasing the overall effectiveness and quality of vulnerability/patching remediation and server configuration management throughout the enterprise. This team member will focus on remediation execution, automation, streamlining processes, improving technique, and performing troubleshooting as needed.
Responsible for security patching and server health of Linux/Unix systems in the enterprise. Scope includes Operating System and targeted software applications for 40,000 servers globally.
Define technical strategies and roadmaps for improving and maintaining server health and security
Technically mentor junior staff and and help grow talent pipeline
Improving processes to reduce/eliminate downtime and increase the scope of work
Develop scalable, automated solutions that improves quality of the vulnerability/patching management program
Implement operational tools to implement, monitor, and alert on results
Ability to quickly troubleshoot Unix/Linux operating system functionality to resolution of incidents. Implement process and scripts improvements to remediate future issues.
Expertise with vulnerability management remediation techniques
Ability to quickly identify and resolve configuration errors
Ability to adapt and improvise in time sensitive situations
Partner with Engineering teams on tools selection
Communicates effectively to customers prior, during, and after implementation windows
Breakdown of duties:
25% system patching and configuration management
20% communication and coordination
35% system administration and code development
20% technical mentoring of junior staff
Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Information Technology (IT), Computer Science or Engineering
15+ years of experience in a Unix/Linux System Administer and/or Systems Engineer role(s)
Demonstrated experience automating and maintaining large enterprise server fleets
Passion for automating and continuously improve repeatable and manual tasks
Strong automation and scripting skills in Python, Perl, PowerShell or similar language
Experience with Agile application development practices
Understanding of VCS and RAC and other clustering solutions
Knowledge of Virtualization, Networking, Storage, and Data Center technologies.
Knowledge of change management, problem resolution and associated tools
Comfortable and effective working in new areas that require experimentation and rapid problem solving
Strong desire to develop and grow technical skills within self and team
