Role Summary:
As the GE Oil & Gas Digital Director of Information Development, you will report to the Vice President, Product Management and be responsible for creating strong working relationships with product management, engineering, field enablement, marketing, and communications to lead the global team responsible for delivering accurate, targeted product documentation and educational content regarding the GE Oil & Gas Digital applications and technologies.

Essential Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for defining and delivering on a compelling content roadmap, as well as determining the channels and media formats best-suited to convey information to each of its consumers.

You will engage mid- to high-level managers and technical leaders to identify priorities and align resource commitments for collaboration on content production, as well as ensure your team delivers high-quality, on-time information assets.

As the GE Oil & Gas Digital Director of Information Development, you will:
  • Drive the creation of the information development strategy for the GE Oil & Gas Digital applications
  • Recruit, expand, and mentor a team of technical writers and content specialists across multiple sites and continents
  • Establish and manage a program plan for your team to deliver high-quality, professional content according to agreed upon schedules
  • Leverage various technologies and media formats to publish technical and training content with maximum impact and reach
  • Ensure technical writers implement your and other GE Digital content architects’ guidance, support the information architecture, follow quality processes & checklists, and adhere to content and style best-practice guidance associated with each type of content.
  • Support the executive team and the broader Engineering organization in the production of agency-grade presentation content and collateral for maximum impact with both internal and external audiences
  • Demonstrate an entrepreneurial creativity and drive that enables you and your organization to keep delivering fresh, engaging content that increases readership and followers quarter over quarter
  • Make a significant contribution to the overall GE Oil & Gas Digital brand’s reputation and drive recognition in the customer, partner, and employee com

    Qualifications/Requirements:

    Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of 6 years’ worth of experience in Information Development and/or Technical Training
  • Minimum of 5 years’ worth of experience at senior manager or director level leading a geographically distributed team
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) (or equivalent knowledge/experience)

    Eligibility Requirements

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job
  • Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen
  • Must be willing to travel (roughly 10% of the time)
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in San Ramon, CA

    Desired Characteristics:
  • Extensive relevant experience documenting, implementing, and/or training users through multiple releases of both on-premise and cloud software on either complex ERP packages, highly technical engineering software applications, or both
  • Highly knowledgeable and familiar with leading document authoring and online publishing tools utilized by information development teams
  • Excellent knowledge of core technical communication concepts, such as topic-based authoring, minimalism, task-oriented design, and single-sourcing, as well as demonstrable experience publishing ISO-compliant documentation
  • Possess outstanding written communications skills, including a command of grammar, syntax, diction, and the conventions and best practices of writing a variety of technical documents
  • Strong collaboration skills:
  • Proven ability to mentor and manage a geographically distributed team of writers and a proven track record of working with highly technical peers in other domains
  • Proven and strong
    • Management and strategic leadership skills with a track record of driving business transformation at enterprise level across multiple businesses
      • Program management skills with ability to estimate scope and time, manage team velocity, create and work to deadlines, and manage team deliverables to a master schedule under aggressive deadlines

            o Establishing and implementing information development processes spanning content planning, creation, and review, as well as applying best practices in translating/localizating applications
            o Decomposing of software processes into the tasks necessary to support the needs of target user audiences and effectively explaining those tasks
            o Understanding and researching user profiles and create content targeted appropriately to meet user goals
            o Editing and QA’ing documentation with ability to recognize errors and coach team on opportunities for improvement in a variety of information deliverables
          • Solid understanding of Lean/Agile software development processes and how to engage information development effectively in the software design, development, and QA cycles and ability to leverage this understanding to control team’s execution of information development projects
          • Proven track record of quickly learning new domains and industries, acquiring product knowledge, understanding how the information development function fits into the overall business strategy, and establishing credibility with peers and direct reports
          • Excellent English verbal & written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse global group of executives, managers, and subject matter
