Role Summary:
The Lead Engineer demonstrates leadership in communicating business goals / programs / processes for an area or business segment. Has the experience or expertise to solve problems. Able to develop and execute objectives for self and others. This role has the ability to effect short-term and some long-term business goals. Design and evaluate optical assemblies for DIT products. Technical lead for optical evaluations of DIT products.


Essential Responsibilities:
As the Lead Engineering - Mechanical Component, you will:

  • Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned individual and team projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements
  • Provide technical leadership to personnel/ cross functional teams supporting the assigned project
  • Implement plans with guidance to meet technical requirements of assigned components and systems
  • Develop action plans with guidance to respond to issues / problems
  • Lead or participate on teams assigned to address organizational initiatives and generic issues
  • Recommend, with guidance, the approach to meet the technical and program requirements
  • Participate and present or review in technical and program reviews
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures
  • Design optical assemblies, mounting, and packaging for the DIT products, supporting the DIT optical digital instrument transformer in high voltage applications
  • Designs and directs personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and determines methods, procedures, and conditions for building and testing products
  • Write quality procedures
  • Direct activities to ensure that manufacturing, customer requirements, and time constraints are met
  • Work with the mechanical engineer to integrate optical designs into DIT products
  • Be able to perform optical coupling analysis on fiber to bulk-optic to fiber assemblies
  • Issue work requests for new assemblies required by customer specifications.
  • Generate, organize and maintain Bill of Materials (BOM) and releases BOM’s to production. Generates Engineer Change Notices
  • Ensure that all changes are carried out via the Engineering Change Notice procedure
  • Review production opto-mechanical drawings and customer drawings with optical interfaces
  • Direct and coordinate operation, maintenance, and repair of optical systems in production and field installations
  • Troubleshoot optical equipment used in production. Assists production with problems related to opto-mechanical design
  • Designs, maintains and trouble shoots opto-mechanical system designs
  • Responsible for optical fiber splice reliability and splicer programming
  • Initiates need for new product development based on customer specifications
  • Validate new designs and design changes to contract requirements
  • Generate status report when required
  • Support Marketing / Sales Department with technical information
  • Provide support to Planning, Purchasing, QA and Production Departments with technical information
  • Direct designer drafters to do drawings of optical designs and customer interfaces
  • Support Field Service department by performing installations of DIT products when needed


Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or college (or a high school diploma/GED with at least 4 years of experience in Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Engineering position


Desired Characteristics:

  • Previous experience with Polarimetry
  • Understanding of Jones and Mueller Matrices
  • Previous experience with fiber coupling, optical isolators, and circulators
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Ability to influence others and lead small teams
  • Lead initiatives of moderate scope and impact
  • Ability to coordinate several projects simultaneously
  • Effective problem identification and solution skills
  • Proven analytical and organizational ability
