Role Summary: The Lead Industrial Designer works in cross-functional development teams to optimize hardware, interaction, and services solutions by applying deep domain expertise in industrial design, Interaction design and design research techniques and an awareness of user needs through design research. They may be asked to guide Industrial Designer entry level staff members. They may be assigned responsibilities up to and including the design direction for an entire product family.
Essential Responsibilities: • Proactively understanding the unmet needs of customers and end users by participating in formal research activities across all phases of the product lifecycle. • Present and defend the global design directions intent and its ability to deliver delight to the end customers & stakeholders [both internally and externally] • Prepare and submit appropriate statements of work outlining each design program and define additional Global Design resources required. • Support the finalization of proposals to be submitted to the program sponsors under the supervision of design management and Senior Industrial Designers. • Apply Global Design’s product development philosophy and values as well as the results of user research toward conceptualizing and generating intuitive and functional solutions for medical device hardware, interaction, and human factors based solutions. • Design work on include system enclosures, controls & displays, patient positioning systems, and patient experience environmental/product innovations. • Design deliverables of programs including sketches, renderings, storyboards, 2-D and 3-D conceptual models of hardware/process improvements that apply a range of low to high-fidelity techniques and ergonomic assessments. • Contribute to the continuous development of Industrial Designer entry level staff members. • Collaborate with hardware engineering, marketing, manufacturing, and procurement teams to create and execute platform-level strategies that promote ease-of-use and consistency of design attributes across GE Healthcare products. • Present the program research, objectives, and outcomes to the leadership of both Global Design and the business/program partners. • Translate concepts and prototypes into formal design requirements and final design configuration documents including CMF specifications and CAD geometry. • Create and maintain the case study that is the program record, including the SOW/research history and the final configuration which defines the intent of the final design direction. • Collaborate across relevant stakeholders to balance user, business, and technical requirements, and to ensure that design recommendations are incorporated within commercialized products. • Work with Quality & Regulatory teams and with external standards committees to ensure medical regulatory requirements are integrated within the product development process. • Serve as thought leaders and as a consulting resource for industrial design techniques to the assigned product family or segment.

Aware of and comply with the GEHC Quality Manual, Quality Management System, Quality Management Policy, Quality Goals, and applicable laws and regulations as they apply to this job type/position 2. Complete all planned Quality & Compliance training within the defined deadlines 3. Identify and report any quality or compliance concerns and take immediate corrective action as required 4. Knowledge and understanding of GEHC Design Controls Procedures in order to ensure that specified design requirements are met
Qualifications/Requirements: 1. Bachelors/advanced degree in Industrial /interaction/graphic design, design research from a recognized institution and minimum 4 years of related experience 2. Minimum of 4 years of design experience. Detailed knowledge and highly proficient with CAD, as well as being able to perform design research and analysis 3. Demonstrated ability to independently draw conclusions from technical /research information 4. Ability to work with healthcare concepts. 5. Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 6. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form 7. Ability to communicate in local language 8. Minimum of 3 years of experience working with cross functional teams 9. Experience leading design reviews 10. Experience with proposal documentation and procedures 11. Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance, training and coaching to less experienced Designers 12. Ability to interact with vendors and customers on engineering design issues 13. Ability to meet reliability, performance, cost, serviceability, and delivery targets 14. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills for presenting, discussing, and documenting technical information 15. Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently toward timely completion of a desired goal
Desired Characteristics: 1. Bachelors degree in Design related field 2. 5 or more years of relevant design experience 3. 2 or more years of experience with design for implementation 4. Design experience with medical products, global teams, and working in a medically regulated industry 5. Knowledge of GE Healthcare design/engineering tools and processes 6. Excellent teamwork, coordination, and communication skills 7. Ability to meet aggressive schedule requirements 8. Adaptable and flexible: being open to change and able to respond to new information, workload changes or updated priorities as they present themselves. 9. Creative problem solver and solution developer when presented with conflicting requirements, business demands and technical risks/issues
