Role Summary: The RF Communications System Engineer is responsible for performing analysis of customer and product management inputs to define concepts and requirements used to develop solutions for automation and control products/systems for the US and global railroad industry. Focus will be on the use of radio systems and other RF and land based communications media for the control of locomotives.
Essential Responsibilities: You will be working in a challenging and progressive environment in which 'turn-key' telecommunications based networks and sub-systems are designed, engineered and commissioned. Our solutions utilize voice and data radios, TCP/IP, Ethernet TDM and RF based wireless networks to integrate numerous systems such as remote control systems for locomotives, vehicle telemetry and other communication links between locomotives or between locomotives and wayside equipment. Supporting large, system level proposals will be a significant part of this position.
In this role, you will:
Perform Communications Engineering tasks in support of program objectives
Develop plans for and execute RF communications surveys
Perform link or propagation analysis pre/post product deployment
Evaluate off-the-shelf RF products as well as products developed or customized specifically for GE systems
Develop creative solutions / architectures and define and document communications system requirements for new and existing products via system specifications and technical memorandums
Execute/coordinate the development of new or custom communication solutions
Conduct Antenna performance/intermodulation studies for locomotive systems
Participate in system safety analyses and provide input into system test and validation activities
Provide technical support to program managers and project engineers when communicating with customers
Provide technical support to Systems and Software Engineers to assist with development of new system architectures or technologies
Provide technical assistance to ensure all RF products meet regulatory requirements for both domestic and international applications.
Bachelors of Science Degree in Engineering or equivalent
5+ years of experience in the RF engineering field
5+ years of experience in the electronics industry
Ability and willingness to travel both domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time
Ability and willingness to ride on freight locomotive for extended periods of time
Railroad industry experience
Experience with RF and railroad communications systems
Experience with project management and test/validation
Experience with both analog and digital land-mobile radio technologies
Experience with RF Propagation Analysis Software
Experience with the design, operation and evaluation of control and/or communication systems
Experience in system engineering and specification generation
Must be able to work in a team environment
Strong written and verbal communication skills
